Zippo Manufacturing Company's story began in 1932 when George G. Blaisdell observed a friend struggling with a clumsy Austrian lighter. Inspired to create a more functional and robust alternative, Blaisdell designed a rectangular case with a hinged lid and a windproof chimney, founding the company in Bradford, Pennsylvania. The very first Zippo lighter was produced in 1933, and its unconditional lifetime guarantee, "It works or we fix it free.™," quickly became legendary.
