Emerson Creek Pottery began its journey in the early 1970s in Uxbridge, Massachusetts, founded by two potters at their historic home, Emerson House. Named after the creek running by the property, the company initially crafted hand-thrown, reduction-fired stoneware like pitchers, vases, and mugs. In 1977, they relocated to Bedford County, Virginia, building their first studio on the historic Wade family property, which remains the heart of their modern campus. The 1980s saw significant growth, notably with the "Flowerpot Boom," where their botanical-inspired earthenware flowerpots, decorated with a distinctive majolica technique, became highly popular. Over the decades, Emerson Creek Pottery evolved, incorporating techniques like RAM pressing and slip casting, and expanding their product lines while maintaining their commitment to handcrafted, American-made ceramics.
All of Emerson Creek Pottery's products are proudly manufactured in the United States. Their entire production process, from mixing their own stoneware clay and creating glazes to hand-painting each piece, takes place at their campus in Bedford, Virginia. They emphasize a hands-on approach, with each piece passing through numerous artisans' hands before completion. Furthermore, they source their non-toxic ingredients from North American suppliers, underscoring their dedication to American production and quality control.
